KEY CONCEPTS

Nursing in acute-care settings has grown so complex that it is no longer possible to standardize, routinize, and delegate much of what the nurse does.

Theory is not focused on how to be a nurse, rather on how nurses acquire nursing knowledge – one could gain knowledge and skills (“knowing how”), without ever learning the theory (“knowing that”).
The nursing theory was based on The Dreyfus model skills acquisition.  According to the theory, a nurse passes through five levels of proficiency, acquisition and development of a skill namely:

Novice

Advanced beginner

Competent

Proficient

Expert

The said levels reflect changes in aspects of skilled performance. One level is based on reliance on past experiences rather than levels of priorities of task to be accomplished. The other one is the understanding of the situation seen as a whole than by parts.
